Rainbow Cafe
About This Spot
Walking into Rainbow Cafe is like stepping into a warm, bustling neighborhood kitchen that somehow manages to feel both familiar and invitingly fresh. Situated in the heart of Elmhurst, this family-friendly spot hums with a gentle energy—a steady flow of conversation, the clinking of coffee cups, and an easy rhythm that welcomes both early risers and midday visitors. The décor, playfully detailed and thoughtfully arranged, invites patrons to linger a little longer, soaking in the cheerful, unhurried vibe.
The atmosphere here strikes a balance between casual comfort and everyday liveliness. It’s the kind of place where locals gather not just for a meal, but for moments—a bright morning shared over freshly brewed coffee, or a late lunch colored by the quiet satisfaction of a well-prepared meal. Seasonal touches and occasional bursts of festive décor add a touch of personality without ever overwhelming the space.
The menu feels like an invitation to explore all the flavors of a comforting American kitchen with plenty of heart. Hash browns and iron man omelets bellow classic breakfast warmth, while options like the skirt steak or broiled pork chops unfold more robust, satisfying layers for those lingering into the afternoon. And whether you lean towards sweet or savory, items like chicken and waffles or the surprising dark cherry pancakes reveal the kitchen’s gentle flair for joyful surprises.
Service here mirrors that same attentive spirit—attuned and welcoming without ever feeling rushed. In a place that often fills with families and regulars, there’s a genuine ease in every interaction, as if the staff and guests are quietly sharing in the rhythm of the neighborhood itself. Outdoor seating offers a breath of fresh air during warmer days, adding yet another layer of casual calm to the experience.
Rainbow Cafe is less about sparkle and more about the steady glow of simple pleasures: good food, thoughtful company, and a place that feels like a little local secret you want to come back to, again and again.

First time here while visiting. This place is awesome! The service was excellent, the portions were huge and what a great atmosphere! They were all decorated for Christmas and it looked great. Will definitely be back next time we are in the area. It's definitely a must go if you are close.

Quaint little breakfast and lunch restaurant in downtown Elmhurst. It has a family feel to it. The place was packed when we went around 1.30pm. They let us move to a different table as I wanted an electric outlet for charging. Plenty of parking as it is next to Elmhurst city parking building which is free. There is some outdoor seating too for summer. Service was fast and efficient. Food was pretty good. I liked my Espanola omelette.

Staff was kind and attentive, and the food was good, but it was pricier than other places for what it was. Parking was not easy to find unless there happens to be a garage we didn't know about (search it up before you go). Overall, it is a typical breakfast location with many options to choose from, including international and dinner options.

Cute breakfast place and wait wasn’t too long. Solid place for breakfast. I’d be interested in coming back to try other dishes Had a taste for pancakes today. I had the Rainbow Cafe special. 2 eggs, bacon and 2 pancakes. Comes with hashbrowns too but I subbed it for a fruit plate. Fruit plate was very generous- had raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, grapes AND orange. Loved the variety. Pancakes were solid. A little dense for my taste but good. I’m on mission to find the best cream of chicken and rice soup. This one was pretty good. Personally I enjoy a little herb flavor but the taste was good. The texture was on the thicker and creamer side too. 7/10
